Energy efficient luxury apartments in Herent
Meadow is the name of a new residential development built on the former site of an iron foundry in Herent, near Leuven (Belgium).
The third phase of this project consists of two new luxury apartment blocks – Dahlia and Egelantier – designed by Binst Architects from Antwerp. They combine a contemporary, organic design, comfort, lots of light and a panoramic view in a top location.

Energy-efficient luxury apartments
Sustainability was very high on the agenda in the design phase. The architects resolutely opted for a fossil-free development and virtually energy-neutral building, known in Belgium as BEN. A BEN apartment requires little to almost no energy to heat, ventilate, cool and produce hot water. The little energy that is still needed to guarantee these utilities is obtained from green energy sources.
In the Dahlia and Egelantier buildings, the combination of solar panels, underfloor heating and a communal heat pump ensured an E-level score of E30 or lower, which is in line with the requirements for all new build homes in Flanders. The E-level is a score that indicates how energy-efficient a building is. The lower the E-level, the more energy-efficient.
More than a reflective membrane
Elevate’s white UltraPly TPO roofing membrane also contributed to the buildings’ energy efficiency. Its white surface reflects sunlight before it is absorbed, contributing to a pleasant indoor temperature and a reduction in cooling energy bills.
But UltraPly TPO has more to offer than just its reflective property. It is also an aesthetic solution that is perfectly compatible with the installation of solar panels and that is flexible enough to cope with technical challenges, such as the buildings’ rounded facade. A piece of cake for the experienced roofing contractors SkyRoofs from Herentals. They fully adhered the UltraPly TPO membrane onto the underlying PIR insulation and ensured the durable connection on the edges of the roof and around the details (supporting structure of the PV installation, roof penetrations, ventilation units, etc.).
