In the latest assessment of building products published by the Dutch Institute for Building Biology and Ecology (NIBE), EPDM roofing membranes have been named as the most environmentally-friendly choice for flat roofs.
NIBE’s assessment, carried out every two years, evaluates the initial cost (installation cost per m²) as well as all hidden environmental costs (emissions, raw materials, etc.) of a selection of roofing membranes. The results of this comparative classification, expressed in Environmental Classification Tables, show that mechanically attached and fully-adhered EPDM roofing membranes have the lowest hidden costs, therefore making them the least environmentally harmful roofing choice for flat roofs. Within the context of NIBE’s assessment, they are awarded a "Class 1" classification.
