RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane chosen to waterproof brand new wedding venue in the UK’s Devon Coast

The Devon coast in the UK is an extremely popular location for weddings. When The Sandy Cove hotel in Berrynarbor decided to build a brand new wedding venue, planning delays and adverse weather conditions meant that the contractor, Custom Construction Group Ltd, had just six months to complete the 330 m² building before the first pre-booked wedding celebration.

The contractor worked closely with the project’s architect, Stapleton Green, to choose construction materials that would enable the project to be delivered on time while offering excellent performance and quality.

Elevate’s RubberGard EPDM membrane was recommended for its ease of installation, long service life and suitability for use with an extensive green roof. John Martinelli from Custom Construction explains: “We always knew that the project would go right to the wire. However, we managed to hand over the day before the first wedding, thanks to close collaboration with the delivery partners and the supply chain.

“We had been using RubberGard EPDM for some time and knew the speed and ease of installation it offers would help us save time on the job while providing a robust, long-term roofing solution that would also work well under the green roof. After discussing it with the architect, the specification was agreed and it genuinely helped us save time on the build.”Custom Construction also used an Elevate vapour control layer on the 700 m² OSB roof substrate, followed by PIR board insulation. The RubberGard EPDM membrane was fully adhered on top of the insulation.

Custom Construction also formed a 30 m long box gutter along two sides of the roof for a neat finish. A sedum green roof was then installed onto most of the roof area, with a small section of artificial turf as the roof descended to ground level at the sides. RubberGard EPDM was also used to cover some of the vertical surfaces of the building along with the front façades.

RubberGard EPDM is ideal for a fast track project like this, as the membrane is supplied on wide rolls, enabling faster installation with fewer seams.  Its elasticity and flexibility make it a robust choice both during installation and throughout its service life. On a project like this, on a live hotel, a flame-free and low noise installation also offered a key advantage.

How did EPDM elevate this project?

QUICK INSTALLATION

Installing EPDM is fast, flame-free and safe for people and the environment. When it comes to large roof surfaces and irregular shapes and forms, EPDM ensures a swift and easy installation process.

GREEN ROOFS

Green roofs cool down and insulate. Reduce noise. Create habitats for birds and insects. All great features. However, it’s only made to last when it’s designed carefully and installed on the non-toxic root-and water resistant EPDM membrane.
