Coffin Butte Facility
Coravllis, Oregon
Republic Services, a national waste management company, was looking for a solution to reduce the amount of precipitation that became leachate after passing through solid waste at their Coffin Butte facility near Coravllis, OR. Once leachate is formed, landfill owners must treat leachate on-site or transport it to a treatment facility. By diverting stormwater away from waste mass, Republic would incur savings by reducing the need for the leachate treatment step.
Construction on the exposed Anchor Cover Areas occurred during October 2011 and 2012. An installation team of 12-15 American Environmental Group employees installed 950,000 square feet of Elevate EPDM Geomembrane in 2011, and 325,000 more square feet of material in 2012.
The system has decreased the amount of precipitation infiltrating solid waste, thus reducing leachate formation leading to significant cost savings for Republic Services.
