As a result of the rapid development of trade and tourism in the city of Trabzon, in northeastern Turkey, the need to replace the old bus terminal, built in the 1980s, had become urgent. The municipality of Trabzon therefore initiated a project designed to provide an extremely modern, aesthetic and comfortable transport hub to the city, with a 3-storey indoor space of 11,000 square meters on an area of 25 decares, including 28 bus platforms, large parking area, social area, restaurants, buffets and a reading room.

Architect studio Studio3 Mimarlik conceived a striking structure with an undulating steel roof. There were a limited number of roofing materials that could be used with such a slope of the roof. Elevate’s UltraPly TPO thermoplastic roofing membrane was chosen for its flexibility and outstanding resistance to UV and ozone. In this region with harsh weather conditions, it offered a sustainable, aesthetic, flexible, long-lasting and easy to install roofing solution.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was the limited budget, which had to be used efficiently. The UltraPly TPO system is very convenient when evaluated in terms of cost/service life, which played a pivotal role on the choice of roofing material.

The gutters of the bus terminal were originally also intended to be covered with the UltraPly TPO membrane. However, application was too complex in terms of safety and workmanship due to the narrow area to be worked on and the edge areas of the roof. The local team therefore recommended the use of Elevate’s RubberGutter EPDM SA, a self-adhered EPDM waterproofing membrane specifically designed for gutters which is more flexible and easier to work with. Labor time was saved and the safety of the workers was improved due to the ease of application.

Elevate technical personnel regularly visited the jobsite and collaborated closely with Trabzon municipality, and the roofing company, sharing technical reports and creating a strong relationship of trust throughout the duration of the works.
