Sometimes renovations can be more challenging than new builds. This is especially the case when you’re operating in an area with safety restrictions and with no possibility of closing down the building for the duration of the works. If you add 25,000 m² of roof surface to the equation, it’s clear that the chosen solution must enable a fast and agile way of working. For the maintenance hangar of Air France at the Charles de Gaulle airport, Elevate’s RubberGard EPDM was the solution.

The 40-year old bituminous roofing system suffered from leaks, poor insulation and deformation. It also no longer met the safety requirements. On top of that, the two layers of bituminous roofing membrane were a heavy weight to carry for the steel construction of this exceptional building. Under a sky full of airplanes, the team began the renovation works, removing about 720 m² of the old roofing system each day and replacing it with the lightweight, single-ply RubberGard EPDM 1.1 mm roofing membrane from Elevate.
The video documents the impressive six-month makeover process using 6.10 m wide by 30 m long membrane panels which allowed a fast installation process. The renovation process also met the strict safety requirements, increased the thermal resistance of the building by a factor of twenty, and reduced the load on the roof by 75%. All this while maintaining round-the-clock working operations during the installation of the new roofing system.
