Egyptian mall gets partial re-roofing with ‘white’ RubberGard EPDM
The old waterproofing system on the roof of the biggest shopping mall in Alexandria (Egypt) was failing and the building owner wanted to re-roof a section with a solid and durable roofing system that would keep the building watertight for many decades, even under the intense exposure of the Egyptian sun, yet required minimal maintenance.

With the support from Elevate´s technical expert, our local team presented the solution to meet the project demands by proposing to use Elevate´s RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane in combination with Elevate´s RESISTA AK PIR insulation boards. The RubberGard EPDM membrane was then painted over with white AcryliTop PC-100 coating to give it a reflective surface, which was one of the requirements from the customer.
In total, a roof section of 13,500 m² was renovated using 70 mm-thick RESISTA AK insulation boards mechanically fixed to the steel deck and 1.5 mm-thick RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane fully adhered to the insulation.
Works carried out by local Elevate Master Contractor SODECO SPECIALTIES S.A.E. included the removal of the old plastic waterproofing membrane and mineral wool insulation, followed by the installation of the new insulation and roofing membrane and the application of the white reflective coating.
There were several challenges on this project: the section of the roof that had to be renovated had a lot of details and penetrations. Elevate’s technical support team closely assisted the contractor by advising on the appropriate detailing work to obtain the best results. In addition, the installation time was quite restricted due to the rainy weather in Alexandria. This meant that the roofing crews had to work in shifts around the clock to meet the set deadline.
The high compression strength of the RESISTA AK insulation boards and the excellent UV resistance and durability of the RubberGard EPDM membrane, together with the know-how of SODECO SPECIALTIES S.A.E. ensured a quality solution for this renovation project, bringing peace of mind to the building owner.
