Green is the new black for supermarket in Spain
When Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona decided to build a new store in a residential area in Reus, near Tarragona, they knew they had to pay special attention to aesthetics. The roof of the new store was at a lower level than the surrounding residential buildings and had a strong visual impact on the neighborhood.

The challenge was to make the roof provide an aesthetically attractive image without incurring into high costs of implementation and maintenance. Elevate’s RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane had already been chosen for the project, but its dark color looked very striking in the residential setting. After considering different options, the building owner decided to use artificial grass on top of the roofing membrane.
The building’s corrugated steel roof deck was first covered with 60-mm thick PIR insulation boards, followed by RubberGard EPDM 1.1 mm thick roofing membrane. The membrane was fixed using Elevate’s RMA system, which is a non-penetrating mechanically attached system developed around Elevate’s QuickSeam RMA self-adhesive strips. Once the PIR insulation boards were fixed in place, the strips were placed as per the wind uplift calculation and were mechanically secured. The RubberGard EPDM membrane was then adhered to the strips.
On this project, the RubberGard EPDM membrane was delivered in 5.08 m wide rolls without folds. This format offers optimal flatness from the start, facilitating the installation and enabling an aesthetic finish.
The RubberGard EPDM membrane also provided a suitable support for the adhesion of the artificial grass. The end result satisfied both the property owner and the neighborhood, offering a "green roof look" without the maintenance and care that a natural green roof requires. This synthetic green roof proved to be a sustainable solution, as the region where the supermarket is located is quite dry and a real green roof would have needed to be irrigated frequently to be kept in good condition.
